FARMINGTON, Maine – Three different players scored as the UMaine Farmington Beavers defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Leib Field.
With the loss, Southern Maine is now 1-2-1 on the season, while the Beavers earn their first win of the season to stand at 1-2 overall.
UMF used a pair of first half goals to take control of the game, outshooting the Huskies 6-0 in the opening 45 minutes of play. UMF's Yusuf Mohamed put the Beavers up early scoring in the sixth minute off of a field from Jake Heimlich. Sawyer Deroche netted an unassisted marker in the 37th minute of play to double the UMaine Farmington advantage headed into the halftime break.
Coming off of his first career hat trick in a 3-0 win at Maine Maritime, Musese continued his hot streak, trimming the Huskies' deficit to a goal with an unassisted score in the 53rd; however, UMF countered in the 63rd when Derek McLaughlin completed an assist from Ethan Cooper for the 3-1 final.
Southern Maine outshot UMF 8-6 in the second half, but the Beavers had the game advantage 12-8. Southern Maine held a 4-0 lead in corner kicks. Senior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) absorbed the loss playing the opening 45, allowing two goals. Senior Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) played the final 45, allowing one goal and making one save. UMF's Matthew Wilson made two saves in the win.
Southern Maine hosts non-conference opponent Thomas College on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) under the lights at Hannaford Field for its next contest.
