GORHAM, Maine – Senior Moctar Niang (New York, N.Y./Dwight School) scored twice and added an assist to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 6-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.
With the win, Bowdoin improves to 4-3 overall earning its second consecutive victory. . Southern Maine is now 2-6-1 overall.
Niang scored the first of two first-half goals in the 29th minute for the Polar Bears before Bowdoin tacked on four more goals in the second half for the lopsided final. Nearly all of Bowdoin's goals came off of set pieces or corner kicks. Bowdoin had a 25-2 lead in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corners.
Senior Matty McColl (Victoria, B.C./Saint Michaels University School) scored in the 43rd for the 2-0 Bowdoin halftime lead, before junior Will Herman (Dover, Mass./Dover-Sherborn), Niang, freshman Dylan Reid (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and sophomore Ryan Donlan (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) scored in the 53rd, 56th, 61st and 72nd respectively.
Southern Maine starting goalkeeper senior Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) mad 10 saves in 76:37 of action, while junior Dalton Cassidy (Fort Fairfield, Maine) made one save in the final 13:32. Freshman Owen Wolfson (Morristown, N.J./Pingry School) made one save to earn the shut out victory for the Polar Bears.
Southern Maine returns to Little East Conference action and will travel to Western Connecticut on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
