GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Emmanuel Smith (Concord, N.H.) had a goal and an assist to highlight a 3-0 win for the Keene State College Owls over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Wednesday night at Hannaford Field.
Keene State remains undefeated in the Little East with the win, moving its record to 9-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference. Southern Maine is now 2-10-1 overall and 1-4 in the Little East.
Smith's finish in the 15th minute started the Owls' scoring, hitting a one-time shot with the outside of his foot to the far post on an assist from junior Donovan Harris (East Hartford, Conn.). Outshooting the Huskies 11-4 in the opening half, Keene was held to one goal in the first 45 minutes.
KSC doubled its lead five minutes into the second stanza when Smith led freshman Wesley McIntosh (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Brady) with a through ball into the box for a breakaway goal. Husky senior Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) made a play on the ball but could not get to it in time. Sophomore Connor Downey (West Islip, N.Y.) scored the final goal of the contest in the 67th minute for the 3-0 final and was assisted by senior Samuel Binogono (Manchester, N.H./Central) on the play.
Mull played a strong game in net, making five saves and assertively coming off of his line to stop Owl opportunities. KSC freshman goalkeeper Anthony Pasciuto (Abington, Mass./Whitman-Hanson) made three saves for the shutout. KSC held a 20-12 lead in shots, and both teams were even with four corner kicks a piece.
Southern Maine travels to UMass Dartmouth on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference game.
