GORHAM, Maine – Junior Justin Jensen (Wethrsfield, Conn.) had a goal and an assist to pace the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 2-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field
With the win, Eastern Connecticut improves to 13-3 overall and 6-1 in the Little East Conference. It is the fourth conference win by shut out for the Warriors. Southern Maine slips to 2-12-2 and 1-5-1 in LEC action.
The Warriors scored both of their goals on set pieces, netting one in each half. Junior Sam Hurlburt (Corwall, Conn./South Kent School) knocked in his first goal of the season for the game-winner off of a lofted cross from Jensen in the 28th minute. Carrying its one-goal lead through the half, Eastern Connecticut doubled its advantage in the 55th minute when Jensen headed in a loose ball in the box following a corner kick for the 2-0 final.
The Huskies outshot Eastern 15-11 for the game and had several chances to get on the board, including a failed penalty kick attempt late in the first half, but Eastern's combined goalkeeping of starter senior Ryan Murphy (Cromwell, Conn.) and sophomore Kyle Boutot (Tolland, Conn.) helped the Warriors to the clean sheet. Murphy made four saves in the first half, while Boutot turned away. Southern Maine senior Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) made three saves in the loss.
Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) against non-conference opponent Husson University.
