USM’s Jonata Mbongo Earns First Team All-Little East Conference

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Jonata Mbongo (Portland, Maine/Deering) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's soccer team was recognized for his outstanding play during the 2018 season earning first team All-Little East Conference honors after a vote by the nine league coaches.

In his first with the Huskies, Mbongo made an immediate impact earning a starting role as part of Southern Maine's back line.  An exceptionally skilled and crafty player, Mbongo established himself as a leader for the Huskies defensively, while taking advantage of offensive opportunities. Playing and starting in each of Southern Maine's 18 games, Mbongo had two goals and two assists two his credit for six points. Named the conference's Defensive Player of the Week once during the season, Mbongo's six points were both highlight-reel worthy. In Southern Maine 1-1 double overtime draw with Coast Guard, Mbongo delivered a perfectly placed cross to the head of teammate sophomore Benjamin Musese (Lewiston, Maine) with 42 seconds remaining in regulation en route to earning Husky Soccer Classic All-Tournament honors.

Mbongo's first goal of the season was also scored in dramatic fashion helping the Huskies salvage a 1-1 draw with Husson University. Rather than assisting on the goal, Mbongo was the goal scorer notching his first career goal as Husky with just 70 seconds to play in regulation. Mbongo's second goal of the season, and first game-winner in a Husky uniform came in Southern Maine's season finale. Rallying from a 1-0 deficit, Mbongo scored the Huskies second goal of the game with just five seconds to play in regulation for a 2-1 USM win.  With Mbongo's late-game heroics, Southern Maine earned its first berth into the Little East Conference playoffs since the 2008 season.
