UNE Nips Southern Maine 1-0

GORHAM, Maine –  Senior Callum Heaslewood (Kennebunkport, Maine) headed in a far-post goal in the 63rd minute to lead the University of New England Nor'easters to a 1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's soccer game Saturday afternoon at Hannaford Field.

With the win, UNE improves to 2-2-1 overall.  Southern Maine dips to 0-5-2 with the loss. Meeting for the 54th time in series history, Southern Maine leads the overall record 33-16-5; UNE has won the last two contests.

Locked in a scoreless battle, Heaselwood headed in a service from graduate student Lee Esposito (Aplaus, N.Y./Niskayuna).  Esposito drove a lofted cross to the far post, and Heaselwood was able to head it down and away to the lower corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.  The goal marked Heaselwood's fourth of the season and second game-winner.

Both teams were fairly statistically even with UNE leading in shots 14-11, while both teams had three corner kicks each.  The Nor'easter's had five shots on target, compared to one for the Huskies.  USM freshman Zach Allocca (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had a near miss in the 24thminute heading a ball with force off of the right post.

Junior goalkeeper Camden Spear (Boothbay, Maine) made one save to earn the shutout victory.  Southern Maine sophomore Cameron Atherton (New Milford, Conn.) made four saves in the loss.

The Huskies are back in action on Saturday. Southern Maine travels to Western Connecticut (12:00 pm) for its first Little East Conference game of 2019.
