GORHAM, Maine  – Freshmen Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) and Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) each earned key singles victories to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon in Gorham, Maine.

         The win is the fifth straight for Southern Maine which improves to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little East Conference.  The loss drops the Colonials record to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the LEC.

         Ahead 2-1 after the doubles points, Southern Maine won four of the six singles points to earn a key Little East Conference victory.  Playing at third singles, Gagne defeated Western Connecticut sophomore Brian Buckman (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) 6-4, 3-6, 6-4.  St. John earned a hard-fought 6-7, 6-2, 10-4 battle at sixth singles over Colonial freshman Enea Dervishi (Waterbury, Conn./Kennedy).

         Junior John Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) and sophomore Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) picked up wins at fourth and fifth singles respectively.  Sproul downed sophomore Ryan Kelm (Newport, R.I./Southington) 7-5, 6-4, while Ross defeated senior Kyle Wilson (Naugatuck, Conn.) 6-4, 6-2.

         Southern Maine travels to UMass Boston on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match.  Western Connecticut hosts Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.).
