GORHAM, Maine  –  Freshman Tyler Strout (Gorham, Maine) earned a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles to highlight several strong performances from first-year players as the Unviersity of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team downed the Lyndon State College Hornets 9-0 in a non-conference match Sunday at the Costello Sports Center courts in Gorham, Maine.

With the loss the Hornets fall to 2-8.  Southern Maine improves to 7-4 and halts a three-match losing skid with the win.

Strout defeated Lyndon State freshman Joe Anderson (Norton, Mass.) as the Huskies swept all three doubles points and then cruised through six consecutive singles points for the decisive win. Freshman Thaddeus St. John (Weld, Maine/Mt. Blue) led the Huskies from the top of the singles lineup with a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 win over LSC junior Michael Howard (Rocky Hill, Conn.).

In doubles action, freshman Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) teamed with junior Adam Whitman (New Castle, N.H./Portsmouth) for an 8-2 win at first doubles.

Southern Maine returns to action on Monday (3:30 p.m.) when it hosts the Gordon College Scots.  Lyndon State hosts MCLA on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.).
