GORHAM, Maine – Senior Zach Caron (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) and sophomore Christopher G. Ross (Somerset, Mass.) battled their way to a 9-8 (1) win at first doubles to preserve the shutout as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Gordon College Fighting Scots 9-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match Monday afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex tennis courts in Gorham, Maine.

         With the win Southern Maine earns its second consecutive victory to improve to 8-4 on the season.  Suffering their ninth consecutive defeat, the Fighting Scots fall to 1-16. 

         Caron and Ross defeated senior Gary Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) and sophomore Kenny Gaudio (Miller Place, N.Y.) as the Huskies finished the doubles points ahead of Gordon 3-0.  Freshmen Scott Gagne (Lewiston, Maine) and Zac Cary (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) combined for a strong 8-2 win at second doubles, while juniors Chris Hyson (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) and Jon Sproul (Bristol, Maine/Lincoln Academy) picked up an 8-3 win at third doubles.

         In singles action Caron fought his way to a tough 6-4, 7-6 (7) win at the top of the order over the elder Guadio.  Playing at sixth singles, Hyson defeated freshman Mike Olszak (Danvers, Mass.) 7-6 (2), 6-3.

         Southern Maine travels to Salem State on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match.  Gordon College travels to Curry College on Wednesday (3:30 p.m) for a Commonwealth Coast Conference tilt.
