PORTLAND, Maine – Junior Gustav Jigrup (Gothenburg, Vastra Frolunda, Sweden) and sophomore Alex Wright (St. Austell, Cornwall, England) earned an 8-6 win at first doubles to help pace the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers to a 9-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference men's tennis match Sunday afternoon at the Deering High School Tennis Courts.
With the win, Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-9 on the season. USM is 0-3 in its spring matches and 0-4 for the year. The win is the second straight fro Colby-Sawyer and their second consecutive win by a 9-0 margin.
Jigrup and Wright battled the Husky tandem of senior Kyle Curley (Gorham, Maine) and junior Samuel Holland (Falmouth, Maine) for the point at the top of the doubles lineup. With the number one doubles match secured, Colby-Sawyer swept the doubles points before playing singles. In singles action, the Chargers earned all six points. Jigrup had to overcome a well-played match from Curley at number one singles but prevailed 3-6, 6-0, 6-4.
Southern Maine hosts non-conference opponent Thomas College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.). Colby-Sawyer takes on Green Mountain College on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in a North Atlantic Conference match.
