FALMOUTH, Maine – Sophomore Kyle Morin (Lewiston, Maine) battled his way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth singles to secure the pivotal fifth point of the match as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Castleton University Spartans 5-4 in a non-conference men's tennis match hosted at the Woodlands Country Club in Falmouth.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 1-1. The loss is the second consecutive for the Spartans who are now 3-2 on the season.
Morin and doubles partner freshman Nick DeAngelis (Wareham, Mass./Classical (RI)) secured an 8-4 win over the Castleton tandem of Nathan Hinson and Riley Laughlin at second doubles to give the Huskies a slim 2-1 lead heading into the singles points.
With Castleton winning the top three flights, Morin's win over Laughlin proved to be decisive. Southern Maine senior captain Chase Orava (Sagamore Beach, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) had an outstanding match at second singles, dropping a tough point 6-3, 5-7 (10-4) to the Spartans' Jared Wheeler. Junior Evan Zuchowski picked up one of the Huskies points with a solid 6-3, 6-3 victory at fifth singles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 pm) against Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College. The venue has been changed and the match will now be hosted at Deering High School in Portland, Maine.
