WATERVILLE, Maine – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' men's tennis team opened its 2019 season on the road at Colby College and dropped a 9-0 decision to the Mules Saturday afternoon at the Alfond-Wales Courts.
With both teams playing in their spring opening matches, Colby College starts its 2019 seaosn with a record of 1-0, while Southern Maine stands at 0-1 following the loss.
The Mules swept all three doubles points from the Huskies led by an 8-0 win from junior Scott Altmeyer (Princeton, N.J.) and sophomore Sumukh Pathi (Westborough, Mass.) over USM's junior Matt Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) and sophomore Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif.).
Papayoanou, a member of the Huskies' men's ice hockey team, made his intercollegiate tennis debut and also played second singles for the Huskies. Another newcomer, senior Matt Norris (Casco, Maine) filled the Huskies sixth singles slot. Colby defeated USM 6-0 in singles for the 9-0 result.
The Huskies have a long hiatus until their next match when they travel to Bridgewater State University on March 23 (1:00 p.m.) for a Little East Conference match up.
