GORHAM, Maine – Led by a 9-7 win at the first doubles spot by sophomore Adam Papayoanou (Valencia, Calif./Hart) and junior captain Matt Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) the University of Southern Maine Huskies captured all three doubles points and went on to a 7-2 win over the Castleton University Spartans to capture their first win of the season.
With the win, Southern Maine is now 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference. Castleton dips to 2-7 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
Papayoanou and Henderson scored the first points of the match defeating Castleton's Jared Wheeler and Alex Fernald. The Huskies then went on to win the third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches for the 7-2 final. Sophomore Nick DeAngelis (Wareham, Mass/Classical (RI)) defeated Riley Laughlin 6-4, 6-1 at third singles, while senior Evan Zuchowski (Dover, N.H.) picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at fourth singles over Jacob Peet. Senior Kevin Dowling (Stamford, Vermont/McCann Technical)
won at fifth singles in three, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
The Huskies travel to Thomas College on Wednesday (4:00 pm) in a non-conference match.
