Freshman Won 5,000 Meters and 4th in 3,000 at LEC Championships

GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine freshman Chandler Vincent (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) has been selected as this week's men's Rookie Track Athlete of the Week.  The final set of weekly awards for the 2017-18 indoor season were selected by the conference office based upon performances at the New England Alliance/Little East Conference Championships this past weekend.

This is the third weekly citation this winter for Chandler.  He was previously selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week on December 11, and as the Track Athlete of the Week on January 15.

At the Alliance/LEC meet, Vincent helped the Huskies capture their fourth straight LEC title by winning the 5,000 meters (LEC meet record 15:24.33), and came back later in the meet to score valuable points by finishing fourth in the 3,000 meters (9:04.27).  USM has won eight of the last 10 LEC indoor titles, and 13 overall since 2000.

The Huskies held off a challenge from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to take the team title, 170-136.  Plymouth State University edged the University of Massachusetts Boston for third place in the seven-team field, 89-83.

In the New England Alliance meet that features schools from the Little East Conference and the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, USM was edged out for the team title by Bridgewater State University, 138.50-124.  UMass Dartmouth was third with 103 points, followed by Westfield State University with 86 and Worcester State University with 83.

Qualified competitors, including Vincent (3,000 and 5,000) will journey to Middlebury College on Friday and Saturday (February 16-17) to compete at the New England Division III Championships.
