Hoyle Competes at NCAA Division III National Championships
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The first day of competition at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships is in the books.
University of Southern Maine freshman Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee), just the second freshman in the history of the USM men's program to compete in an individual event at the NCAA indoor championships, competed in the preliminary round of the men's 800 meters posting a time of 1 minute, 54.26 seconds. Hoyle's time was his second best this season, surpassed only by his NCAA qualifying time of 1:53.47 at the Maine State Open on February 24. He was not among the eight runners who advanced to tomorrow's championship final.
Hoyle joins Anthony Stanton as the only USM freshmen to compete in an individual event. Current USM junior Hany Ramadan (Portland, Maine/Deering) competed in the 4 x 400-meter relay during his freshman season (2016).
The NCAA indoor championships conclude the 2017-18 season. The USM men open their 2018 outdoor season on March 31 at the Tufts University (Medford, Mass.) Snowflake Invitational.
