Southern Maine Men Collect LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) and sophomore Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) were among the recipients when the Little East Conference announced its third set of weekly awards for men's indoor track and field today for the week ending December 16.
Helderman was named the Field Athlete of the Week for the third time in his career, while Hoyle got the nod as the Track Athlete of the Week. USM freshmen Tom Vesosky (Colchester, Vt.) and Riley Peterson (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) swept the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week respectively.
The Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay combination of seniors Justin Pierce (Standish, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Trey Rogers (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little), sophomore Josh Bloom (Bar Harbor, Maine/MDI) and junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine) received the Relay of the Week honor.
Competing at the season-opening USM Open I meet at the Costello Sports Complex field house, Helderman won the pole vault clearing 4.70 meters (15-5). Hoyle won the mile with a time of 4 minutes, 19.67 seconds. Helderman presently is tied for third nationally in the pole vault while Hoyle's converted time (4:16.40) puts him at the top of the list in the mile.
In their first collegiate meet, Vesosky won the 200 meters with his time of 23.65 seconds and Peterson took third in the pole vault clearing 3.80 meters (12-5 ½).
The relay quartet won their race with a time of 3:35.52.
Southern Maine will be off for final exams and the holidays until January 5 when it hosts the USM Open II meet at the Costello Sports Complex.
