Helderman, 4x400 Relay Receive LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced Monday afternoon that University of Southern Maine senior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) and the 4 x 400-meter relay quartet of junior Donivyn Harms (Westbrook, Maine/Rochelle [Ill.] Township), sophomore Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee), and seniors Justin Pierce (Standish, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Jared Marshall (Gloucester, Mass.) have been selected for weekly recognition.
Helderman was picked as the Field Athlete of the Week for the fourth time during the indoor season. The relay was tabbed as the Relay of the Week, marking the fifth time this season that a USM relay has received the weekly honor.
Competing at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational held at Boston University, Helderman finished third in the pole vault clearing a season best 4.95 meters (16-2 ¾). He was one of four competitors to clear that height and was placed third on the tiebreaker. Helderman is currently ranked first in New England and seventh nationally in Division III.
The relay combined for a season-best time of 3 minutes, 19.30 seconds to finished 14th overall (fourth among D3 schools, and more than four seconds ahead of the next LEC team). Their time moved them into second place on the latest New England Division III performance list, and 17th nationally.
The Huskies travel to Plymouth State University this Saturday for the annual New England Alliance and Little East Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.
