Huskies Finish Third at Maine State Intercollegiate Championship

WATERVILLE, Maine  – Freshman Will Wegener (Falmouth, Maine) won the 400-meter dash with an ECAC qualifying time to highlight several strong performances by the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's outdoor track and field team at the 2012 Maine State Intercollegiate Track and Field Championship hosted by Colby College this Saturday in Waterville, Maine.

         The Huskies finished third out of four teams with 82.50 points.  Bates won the meet with 235 points, followed by Bowdoin in second place with 222 points.  Colby placed fourth with 74.50 points.

         Wegener clocked a time of 49.85 seconds in the 400-meter dash. Wegener's first place finish was one of two for the Huskies on the day.  Senior Ben Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mt. Mansfield Union), an All-American in the 800-meter run in the winter, won the same event with a time of one minute, 55.33 seconds.  Manning's time was just two tenths of a second off of the USM school record and narrowly edged second place finish James LePage of Bates by four one-hundredths of a second.  Sophomore Julian Gazzelloni (Windham, Maine) placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:56.36.

         Senior Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) scored 20 of the Huskies 82.50 points competing in the throwing events.  Harmon had a pair of third place finishes in the shot put (13.98 meters) and the discus (41.59 meters) and earned a second place finish in the hammer throw (49.65 meters).  Freshman Tanner Storey (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) earned a second place finish in the high jump clearing 1.86 meters (six feet, 1.25 inches). 

         Seniors Erich Neuts (Portland, Maine/Deering) and John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) finished three-four in the 10000-meter run.  Neuts took third with a time of 33:28.90 and was followed by Vallo in fourth with a time of 33:55.41. 

         Southern Maine competes at the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championship on Saturday (11:00 a.m.)
