Hoyle Sets 800 Meter Record at MIT Last Chance Meet
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine freshman Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) broke the outdoor school record in the 800 meters Thursday evening at the MIT Last Chance Meet and potentially secured a spot in next week's NCAA championships. The MIT meet, a non-team-scoring event, was the final one for the 2018 outdoor regular season.
Hoyle won the race posting a time of one minute, 51.68 seconds to eclipse the previous outdoor record of 1:52.13 set by Ben Manning on the same track on May 12, 2012. At press time, Hoyle's time moved him up to 18th on the latest national performance list.
Junior Drew Gamage (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) competed in the triple jump posting a best mark of 14.02 meters (46-0). Senior Justin Pierce (Standish, Maine/Mt. Ararat) cleared 1.93 meters (6-4) in the high jump.
To be considered an NCAA qualifying mark, all results must be submitted by midnight Eastern time. The NCAA will post the final descending order lists for the 2018 Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships tomorrow (Friday, May 18) at noon for final declarations for the championships to be submitted. The top 20 declared men in each individual event will compete for the national title at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on May 24-26.
