Huskies Travel to AIC Open on Saturday
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine received two men's track and field honors Monday when the Little East Conference announced its weekly awards for the week ending March 31. Sophomore Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) was picked as the Track Athlete of the Week and the Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay was chosen as the Relay of the Week.
Competing in the Huskies' outdoor season-opening event, the Tufts University Snowflake Classic, Hoyle posted a runner-up finish in the 1500 meters with his career-best time of 3 minutes, 59.98 seconds, and ran a leg for the Huskies' winning 4 x 400-meter relay. Hoyle's 1500 time met the qualifying standard for the New England Division III Championships in May.
The Huskies 4 x 400 relay of junior Donivyn Harms (Westbrook, Maine), Hoyle, freshman Stephen Duckett (Manchester, N.H.) and junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine) won that event with their combined time of 3:24.32. Their time ranks 29th nationally in Division III and second in the region.
Southern Maine amassed 74 points on the day to finish fourth among the 19 teams that scored in the meet. Rensselaer Polytechnic edged out host Tufts for the top spot in the team standings, 157.50-151.00. Amherst College was third with 92, and Trinity College completed the top five teams with 58.
The Huskies will travel to Springfield, Mass., next Saturday (April 6) to compete at the A.I.C. Yellow Jacket Open.
