Hoyle Sets School Record in 800 Meters
GORHAM, Maine -- The Little East Conference announced its final set of weekly men's track and field honors Monday afternoon with University of Southern Maine sophomore Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) being selected as the Track Athlete of the Week, and the Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay being picked as the Relay of the Week.
This was the fourth time during the spring outdoor season that Hoyle has been the recipient of the Track Athlete of the Week honor. The relay foursome of junior Donivyn Harms (Westbrook, Maine), senior Justin Pierce (Standish, Maine/Mt. Ararat), junior Jack Ricker (Conway, N.H./Kennett) and Hoyle was recognized for the second time this season.
Competing at the New England Division III Championships held this past weekend at Williams College, Hoyle broke his school record in the 800 meters with his time of 1 minute, 51.45 seconds to take second place. The second-year runner took 23 one-hundredths of a second off his previous mark set last May.
The relay finished sixth with their season-best time of 3:21.43.
The Huskies compiled 25 points over the two days of competition for their 14th-place finish among the 32 scoring teams. Perennial powerhouse MIT won the team title with139.50 points. Tufts University took the runner-up spot with 89.50 points. Middlebury College with 64 points, WPI with 60 and Bridgewater State University with 51 completed the top five teams.
Qualified competitors will travel to Southern Connecticut State University this Friday and Saturday to compete in the NEICAAA New England Outdoor Championships.
