Huskies Compete at NEICAAA New England Championships

            NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- University of Southern Maine junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine) had an outstanding first day in the decathlon competition and senior Ron Helderman (Madison, Maine) earned All-New England honors in the pole vault Friday during the first day of competition at the annual New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) New England Outdoor Track and Field Championships being hosted at Southern Connecticut State University.

            Moody opened the decathlon competition by running a personal best time of 11.09 in the 100-meter dash to score 841 points.  He followed that effort with another personal best in the long jump with a mark of 6.89 meters (22-7¼) for 788 points.  In the shot put, Moody had a throw of 10.79 meters (35-5) for 533 points.

            Moving to the final two events of the first day, Moody cleared 1.78 meters (5-10) in the high jump to score 610 points.  In the 400 meters, Moody crossed the finish line in 51.31 seconds to score 755 points.  For the five events, he has a total of 3,527 points and stands in third place.

            Helderman earned outdoor All-New England honors for the third time in his career clearing 4.56 meters (14-11½) on his second attempt to finish in a tie for sixth place.

            Junior Donivyn Harms (Westbrook, Maine/Rochelle (Ill.) Township) posted a time of 50.50 seconds in the preliminary round of the 400 meters, and senior Logan Gailitis (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) threw the javelin 52.99 meters (173-10).

            Competition resumes Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with the second day's events in the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon.
