USM Sending Four Athletes to NCAA Division III Championships

            GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's and women's track and field teams will be sending four athletes to the 2019 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships that begin Thursday at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.

            For the third straight year, junior Adela Kalilwa (Lewiston, Maine) will be representing the USM women's team at the national championships.  On the men's side, sophomores Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee) and Ben Musese (Lewiston, Maine) and junior C.J. Moody (Old Town, Maine) will make the trip.  This will be the first trip to the outdoor nationals for the three men.

            Kalilwa will compete in the two horizontal jumping events,  She is the seventh seed in the long jump with her qualifying mark of 5.82 meters (19-1¼) at the New England Division III Championships, and the 11th seed in the triple jump based upon her mark of 11.89 meters (39-0¼) at the Aloha Relays.

            An indoor All-American in the 800 meters, Hoyle is making his initial trip to the outdoor championships based upon his school-record time of 1:51.45 at the New England Division III Championships.  He is the eighth seed among the 20 qualifiers.

            Musese is the 10th seed for the men's triple jump.  He posted his best regular-season jump of 14.66 meters (48-1¼) at the NEICAAA New England Championships.

            After earning indoor All-American honors in the heptathlon, Moody will try to add outdoor All-American honors in the decathlon.  He is the 16th seed based upon his score of 6,477 points scored at the NEICAAA New England Championships.

            Kalilwa will compete in the long jump on Thursday (5 p.m.) and the triple jump on Saturday (1:45 p.m.).

            The decathlon will be contested on Thursday and Friday.  Hoyle will race in the preliminary round of the 800 on Friday (4:15 p.m.).  Musese will compete in the men's triple jump on Saturday (11 a.m.).
