Hoyle, Nure, Vincent Receive USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

GORHAM, Maine -- The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today that three members of the University of Southern Maine men's cross country team - sophomore Zach Hoyle (Sidney, Maine/Messalonskee), freshman Yahya Nure (South Portland, Maine/Deering) and junior Chandler Vincent (Pownal, Maine/Freeport) - have earned spots on the USTFCCCA 2018 NCAA Division III Cross Country Individual All-Academic Awards list.

In addition to the three individual honors, the Huskies' men's team earned a spot on the USTFCCCA Team All-Academic list as well.  This is the second straight season that Hoyle and Vincent have earned the individual honor.  The team honor is the first for the Huskies since the 2007 season.

"We're exceptionally proud of Zach, Chandler, and Yahya for their All-Academic Honors," commented sixth-year head coach Ryan Harkleroad.  "Their success in the classroom mirrors their success as athletes, and it's a reflection of the hard work and dedication they bring to all aspects of being student athlete.

"While these three individuals stand out for their individual honors, our entire team has brought great focus to their studies and are well deserving of the All-Academic Team honor that the men's cross country program earned this fall."

There were 682 men and women student-athletes named USTFCCCA All-Academic for the 2018 cross country season, and 393 teams were on the All-Academic Teams list.  In order to qualify for the individual honor, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a 4.0 scale and finish in the top 25 percent of their respective regional championship meet.  To earn the Team All-Academic distinction, a team must compete and compile a team score at an NCAA Regional meet and have a 3.10 or better cumulative team grade point average.

At the NCAA Regional Championships hosted by Bowdoin College in November, the trio helped USM post an 11th-place finish.  Hoyle, who is majoring in history and has a 3.889 GPA, crossed the line in the 81st spot with a time of  26:42.93.  Nure, a biology major with a 3.462 GPA, finished in 92nd place with his time of 26:51.96.  Vincent, a biology major with a 3.343 cumulative grade point average (GPA) came home in 57th place crossing the finish line in 26:16.63.
