STANDISH, Maine   – Freshman Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine/Gardiner) and senior Erica Boulanger (Somersworth, N.H.) each earned wins in the circle, limiting the University of Southern Maine Huskies to just three runs over 14 innings as the St. Joseph's College (Maine) Monks earned a non-conference softball doubleheader sweep Thursday evening at Bailey Field.

         With the two wins, St. Joseph's stops a five-game losing skid and improves its record to 19-16 overall.  Southern Maine falls to 22-11-1 with the pair of losses.

GAME ONE: SJC 8, Southern Maine 3

         Smith earned her eighth win of the season, allowing one earned run in four innings on four hits, and freshman Jennelle Thompson (Farmington, N.H.) fired the final three innings allowing one earned run on three hits and walk as SJC took game one 8-3.

         Thompson had a pair of RBI in the win for the Monks, while senior Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine/Sacopee Valley) and sophomore Kelsy Gaddy (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each drove in a run.  The Monks got on top of the Huskies early scoring three runs in the bottom of the first and led 4-0 after two innings before USM got on the board.  SJC took advantage of tough opening inning for USM freshman Sammi Goode (Bucksport, Maine).  Goode allowed two earned runs, three total, in the first.  She gave up one hit and four walks in one inning before being lifted in favor of freshman Crystal West (South Paris, Maine/Oxford Hills), who finished the game allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and a walk in five innings.

         Sophomore Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) drove in two of USM's runs with a double in the top of the third, while junior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) had an RBI single up the middle in the top of the sixth.  


GAME TWO: SJC 4, Southern Maine 0

         Boulanger pitched a complete game shutout scattering six hits and two walks over seven innings to lead the Monks to the win.  Boulanger struck out six in the win. Junior Mariah Harrison (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle), junior Jennifer Murphy (Andover, Mass./Ursuline Academy) and freshman Melodie Bailey (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) each had an RBI for the Monks.

         USM starter sophomore Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) took the loss, allowing four earned runs on six hits and four walks in five innings.  Sophomore Katelyn Tucker (Gray, Maine/Windham) pitched the final inning for USM and did not yield a hit. Kelly and freshman Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) collected two hits each for the Huskies, including a double for Kelly.  


         Southern Maine closes out the regular season at home against Keene State College in an LEC doubleheader on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).  St. Joseph's hosts Johnson and Wales in a single game on Friday (3:00 p.m.).
