GORHAM, Maine – The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced its Academic All-District Softball teams for all three NCAA divisions Thursday afternoon and University of Southern Maine senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine) was among the 11 student-athletes voted to the District One NCAA Division III team by the district members of CoSIDA.
Caron is the fifth USM softball player to be named to the Academic All-District team, and the first Husky softball player to earn Academic All-District honors since Sarah McLean earned the academic distinction in 2003. To be nominated for the Academic All-District team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.30 or above. Caron carries a 4.0 GPA as a graduate student in the Master's of Public Health program at USM, and earned her bachelor's in Biology with a 3.96 GPA in May 2016. With her selection to the All-District first team, Caron is now eligible for the Academic All-America ® national ballot. The Division III Academic All-America ® teams will be announced at the end of May.
Recently named co-winner of the 2017 Paula D. Hodgdon Leadership Award during the athletics' department year-end honors banquet, Caron's selection to the Academic All-District First Team is one of several academic honors she has earned during her career. A two-time recipient William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete and Little East Conference All-Academic Team selection, Caron was a two-year captain for the Huskies' softball team. A Teaching Assistant for the Intro to Public Health class and the Graduate Assistant for the Master's in Public Health program chair, Caron also volunteers her time with 4H helping grow interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) in a local fifth grade classroom. This summer, Caron will complete a field experience opportunity with the Maine Center for Disease Control (CDC) working in Chronic Disease and Epidemiology. Caron hopes that her educational background and various field experiences and internships will translate into career success as she plans on pursuing epidemiology or environmental health in her post-graduate years.
The Huskies' starting shortstop for the last three seasons, Caron led Southern Maine in batting average (.349), RBI (21), hits (38), doubles (10), and triples (3). For her career, Caron played in 112 games collecting 133 hits and driving in 61 runs. She hit .356 over her career, with 25 doubles, seven triples, and five home runs.
