CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' softball dropped a pair of games in its second day of its Spring Break games falling to Rowan University Owls 10-0 in five innings, and the Thomas More Saints 10-2 in six innings/
With the pair of losses Southern Maine is 1-3. Rowan improved to 3-3 with its win over USM, while Thomas More moves to 5-5.
In the opener, Rowan used eight hits and took advantage of three Huskies' fielding errors to earn a 10-0 shut out. Kelly Duffy led the Owls with three RBI, while Morgan Zane and Christina Guarino each had two RBI. Lauren Shannon earned the win in the circle allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Senior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Ashley Alward (Skowhegan, Maine) all had one hit for USM. Brown took the loss for USM allowing nine runs (five earned) in 3.1 innings pitched. She gave up seven hits and three base on balls.
Thomas More broke open a 2-1 game scoring five runs in the bottom of the second to take a commanding 7-1 lead en route to its 10-2 win. The Saints banged out 13 hits, three for extra-bases, in the win. Mary Beth Odom had a double and a home run for five RBI to pace the Saints.
Olivia Jackson earned the win pitching three innings and allowing one earned run on three hits and three walks. Hannah Sprague finished the game firing three scoreless innings.
Cross, Brown, junior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine), Madison Greene (Moultonborough, N.H.) and Lauren Gasaway (Old Town, Maine) each had a hit for USM. Greene had USM's lone RBI. Alward was stung with the loss, giving up seven earned runs on six hits and four walks in 1.2 innings. Greene finished the game pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday against Lawrence (3:45 pm) and Stevenson (6:00 pm).
