CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) went 3-for-4 at the plate and drove in three RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 (6 inn) win over the Lawrence University Vikings in a non-conference softball game at Hancock Recreational Center.
With the win, Southern Maine snaps a three-game skid and improves its overall record to 2-3. Lawrence falls to 0-4. Southern Maine's second game of the day with Stevenson was cancelled due to inclement weather.
All three of Cross' hits when for extra bases as the Huskies' captain collected a pair of doubles and a three-run home run as part of an 11-hit attack for Southern Maine. Juniors Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) and Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) each had a pair of hits for USM, while Brown drove in a run. Sophomore Hannah Kenney went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Brown also earned the win in the circle for USM spinning a two-hit gem, striking out four without yielding a walk. Lawrence's Emily Ueberluss took the loss allowing four earned runs (seven total) on six hits and three walks in four innings. Madeline MacLean pitched the final two innings for the Vikings giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out two.
Southern Maine jumped on top of the Vikings early scoring four runs in the top of the first. Martin led off the game with a double, and came around to score on a Lawrence fielding error, before Cross hit her first double of the game to center field to put runners on second and third. After a walk and a pop-out made it one away and bases full, junior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) drew a walk for an RBI and a 2-0 lead. Another pop out made it two down with bases still full for Kenney who smacked a double to left field for two runs and a 4-0 USM advantage.
The score stayed 4-0 through three full before USM tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth. Husky freshman Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee) was hit by a pitch to lead off, and Martin singled through the right side to set up two runners on with one-out for Cross. Collecting her first home run of the season, and 10th of her career, Cross drove in all three runs in the inning with a shot to center field.
Brown rolled through the fourth and fifth retiring the Lawrence side in order and USM added two more runs in the sixth. Freshman Kaitlyn Nelson (Guidhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) led off the sixth with a single and advanced to third on Cross' second double of the game. Nelson touched home on an RBI single from junior Tabatha Hirsch (Coral Springs, Fla./South Plantation) and Cross scored on Brown's RBI single. Facing their last at bat and the eight-run rule, the Vikings were unable to touch Brown for a hit as she struck out the side for the win.
Southern Maine has Sunday off and will return to action on Monday for two more games versus Wisconsin-Superior (9:45 am) and Rutgers-Camden.
