CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Southern Maine Huskies' softball team combined for 25 hits and 27 runs in a pair of non-conference wins over the University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets and the Rutgers-Camden Scarlet Raptors at Hancock Field. Southern Maine defeated Wisconsin-Superior 14-3 in five innings, and then downed the Scarlet Raptors 13-1 in five innings.
With the two wins, Southern Maine extends its win-streak to three games and improves to 4-3 overall. Rutgers-Camden is 2-2 with the loss to the Huskies, while the Yellowjackets are now 2-8.
Junior Alexis Brown(Malden, Mass.) scattered four hits over five innings to earn her third win of the season as the Huskies belted out 13 hits, including five for extra bases in a 14-3 win over the Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets.
Four Huskies had two hits in the romp, including junior Erin Martin(Biddeford, Maine) who went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and two runs scored from her leadoff position. Junior Kayleigh Bohan (Bedford, N.H.) also collected a pair of hits on a 2-for-2 day at the plate with a two RBI and her first home run of the season. Brown and senior Brooke Cross(Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each drove in two runs.
Wisconsin-Superior's Amanda Kishish took the loss for the Yellowjackets allowing 11 runs (nine earned) on 10 hits and a walk in four innings. Damara Theis relieved Kishish in the final inning allowing three runs (none earned) on two hits and a pair of walks. Ashley Taipale led Wisconsin-Superior with two RBI on a home run in the fourth.
Martin continued her solid play at the plate for the Huskies driving in four runs on a 2-for-3 effort with three runs scored. Martin collected her third home run of the season with a four-run grand slam in the top of the first as USM jumped ahead 8-0 and batted around its lineup.
Bohan and junior Tabatha Hirsch(Coral Springs, Fla./South Plantation) each had two RBI in the contest, and all nine of the Husky starters collected a hit.
JuniorMadison Greene(Moultonborough, N.H.) collected her first win of the season giving up just two hits and two walks in a scoreless effort. Freshman Ashley Alward(Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) closed the game allowing an unearned run, a hit and a walk, while striking out four.
Alexis Davis, Jordan Howey and Marissa Beebe combined to collect the Scarlet Raptors three hits, while Davis had an RBI double. Kendra Pfister took the loss allowing seven runs (one earned) in .2 innings pitched. Mackenzie Lafferty pitched the final 4.1 innings allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits and two walks while striking out five.
Southern Maine faces Nichols (9:45 a.m.) and Trinity (11:00 a.m.) on Tuesday.
