Huskies’ Split: Nichols 7, Southern Maine 0; Southern Maine 9, Trinity 1 (6 inn)

CLERMONT, Fla.   –  Junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) improved to 4-1 on the season and classmate Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) went 4-for-7 over two games to highlight a 1-1 day for the Huskies at Hancock Field. Southern Maine opened the day with a 7-0 loss to the Nichols College Bison before bouncing back for a 9-1 (6 inning) victory over the Trinity College Bantams.  

            With the split, Southern Maine stands at 5-4  overall. Nichols is 2-2-1 with the win over the Huskies, Trinity evens out at 3-3. All five of the Huskies wins have come in inning-shortened games this season.  

 

GAME ONE: 

            Nichols used a six-run bottom of the second to take control of the game to earn its shut out win over the Huskies.  Bison pitcher Alexis Ferris went the distance scatting six hits, all singles, and five walks over seven innings with seven strikeouts to earn her second win of the season.  Cara Mayhew went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI to pace the Nichols' offense, while Samantha Kostek and Callie Andrews each drove in a run. 

            Martin was the Huskies' lone repeat hitter with a pair of singles.  Senior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy), junior Tabatha Hirsch (Coral Springs, Fla./South Plantation), junior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and sophomore Lauren Gasaway (Old Town, Maine) each had singles. 

            USM freshman Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) was tagged with the loss giving up six runs (three earned) in 1.1 innings. Alward, who yielded four walks and three hits, struck out four in her appearance, but was harmed by Husky defensive miscues.  USM committed two of its three game errors in the inning. Junior Madison Greene (Moultonborough N.H.) pitched the final four innings allowing two hits and a walk  for one earned run. She struck out four. 

 

GAME TWO: 

            Martin extended her hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate with one run scored and two RBI as USM popped Trinity for nine hits in the win.  The Huskies used a four-run fifth to earn the inning-shortened victory. 

            Tinsman had three RBI on a 1-for-3 effort, including drawing a bases-loaded walk to end the game with the Huskies' ninth run. Sophomore Hannah Kenney was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI in a solid outing.  

            Brown continued her steady play in the circle striking out one and not giving up a walk over six innings.  Brown limited her opponents to just five singles in the contest for the win.  Trinity's Lindsay Pressman took the loss giving up five runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks, while earning a pair of strikeouts.  Madeline Spencerorel pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing four runs (one earned) on gthree hits and two walks.  

 

UP NEXT: 

            Southern Maine picking up a game against Wisconsin-Superior (3:00 pm) tomorrow to replace the weather cancelled game vs. Stevenson, the Huskies will play three times on Wednesday.  USM opens against Hamilton (9:45 am), and faces Plattsburgh (11:45) before taking on the Yellowjackets.
