MANSFIELD, Conn. – Morgan Bolduk pitched a three-hit complete game shutout in game two of a doubleheader to earn her seventh win of the season and lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a pair of Little East Conference softball games Sunday afternoon at Clyde Washburne Field.
With the sweep, Eastern improves to 9-3 overall and starts the LEC season at 2-0. It is the second consecutive win for the Warriors. Southern Maine saw its two-game win streak come to an end to dip to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
GAME 1: Eastern Connecticut 11, Southern Maine 3
Jackie Lewis hit a pair of home runs and drove in five runs as the Warriors defeated the Huskies 11-3 in six innings. ECSU collected 12 hits and 11 RBI off of Southern Maine in the win. Lewis was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Brooke Matyasovsky went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI, collecting a double and a home run. Alexis Tyrell also ripped a double and a home run in a 3-for-4 effort at the plate with 1 RBI.
Morgan Sanson earned the win in the circle for ECSU pitching 3.2 innings, allowing one run (earned) on five hits and four walks while striking out three. Haleigh Cardello came in to relieve Sanson in the fourth and pitched 2.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on one hit and two walks. She struck out four.
Southern Maine junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) took the loss pitching 5.2 innings. She allowed 11 earned runs on 12 hits and two walks, while striking out four. Huskies' junior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) was the lone repeat hitte for USM with a pair of singles. Brown went 1-for-4 at the plate with a two-run double. Freshman Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont) finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and RBI.
GAME 2: Eastern Connecticut 4, Southern Maine 0
Bolduk improved to a perfect 7-0 scattering three hits over seven innings while striking out eight to earn the 4-0 shutout victory for the Warriors in game two. Bolduk also got it done at the plate for ECSU knocking a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to break open a 1-0 game. Bolduk finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored and three RBI. Tyrell went 2-for-3 as the only other repeat hitter for the Warriors.
Freshman Ashely Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) took the loss for Southern Maine allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks. She struck out six. Junior Kayleigh Bohan (Bedford, N.H.) collected two of the Huskies' three hits, including a double. Martin had the Huskies' other hit.
The Huskies are off until Saturday (1:00 pm) but remain on the road and will face Keene State in a Little East Conference doubleheader.
