SALEM, Mass. – Junior Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) went 4-for-9 with two RBI, and sophomore Hannah Kenney (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) and freshman Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley) each collected three hits over two games as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the Salem State University Vikings 10-1 (6 inning) and 3-0 in a non-conference softball doubleheader Wednesday evening. With the two wins, Southern Maine is now 9-7 on the season. Salem State drops to 9-11.
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 10, Salem State 1 (6)
Led by three hits from Martin, the Huskies collected 13 hits and scored 10 runs off of Salem State's Dominique Del Vecchio for the six-inning victory. USM freshman Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) earned the win in the circle pitching 5.0 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits. Not allowing a walk, Alward struck out four.
Five Huskies had at least two hits in the contest. Martin was 3-for-5, including a pair of doubles, with two RBI, while Kenney was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Hink, junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) and senior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) each had two hits.
Hink and Brown each drove in a pair of runs, while Cross collected her 100th career hit during the game.
Scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings, the Huskies led the Vikings 6-1 through five innings. USM invoked the eight-run rule by scoring four runs in the top of the sixth. The Huskies scored all four of their runs with two outs. Kenney, Hink and Martin each had an RBI in the inning as did junior Tabatha Hirsch.
Del Vecchio took her first loss of the season to drop to 3-1 allowing 10 runs (three earned) on 13 hits and four walks. Hampered by five errors, Del Vecchio struck out three in the loss.
GAME TWO: Southern Maine 3, Salem State 0
Striking out a career-high 10, Brown picked up her fifth win of the season firing a five-hit shutout to lead the Huskies.
Held to six hits, Southern Maine got enough out of its offense and relied on Brown's outstanding effort in the circle. Sophomore Lauren Gasaway (Old Town, Maine) and Hink collected two of the Huskies six hits in the game in the top of the second with RBI singles to pace the Huskies' offense. USM scored its third run in the top of the fifth when junior Kayleigh Bohan (Bedford, N.H.) drew a two-out bases loaded walk for an RBI.
Salem State's Gracie Hogan took the loss allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits and a walk in 4.1 innings. Del Vecchio came on in the fifth to close out the game, pitching the final 2.2 innings allowing one hit and a walk.
Southern Maine travels to nearby University of New England on Thursday (3:00 pm) for a non-conference double header in its next games.
