GORHAM, Maine – Junior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and four RBI over two games, and freshman Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) pitched a shutout win as the University of Southern Maine Huskies split its Little East Conference doubleheader with the Castleton University Spartans Saturday afternoon.

Southern Maine scored seven runs in the bottom of the first in game one and invoked the eight-run rule to defeat the Spartans 9-0 in game. In game two, Castleton scored three runs in the top of the fifth and held off the Huskies with strong defensive effort for the 6-5 win for the split

THE RECORDS:

  • Southern Maine 11-8, 1-3 LEC
  • Castleton 7-10, 1-3 LEC

GAME ONE:  Southern Maine 7, Castleton 0

The Huskies took advantage of a pair of Castleton errors and scored seven runs on seven hits to jump ahead of the Spartans early. Tinsman and freshman Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley) each had two-run doubles in the inning, while freshman Kaitlyn Nelson (Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) and junior Kayleigh Bohan (Bedford, N.H.) each had RBI singles.

Tinsman tacked on two more runs for the Huskies in the bottom of the second to provide Southern Maine with all the offense it needed for the 9-0 final.  Tinsman stroked her second double of game on a two-out at bat to score junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.) and sophomore Hannah Kenney (Oxford, Maine/Oxford Hills) – both of whom reached with infield singles.

Alward was outstanding in the victory allowing just a single hit and a walk in five innings of scoreless work.  She struck out five to earn her fourth win of the season.

Castleton's Kylie Wright absorbed the loss allowing nine runs (three earned) on 10 hits in two innings of work. Emily Harvey closed the game pitching the final two innings and giving up a single hit and a walk.

GAME TWO: Castleton 6, Southern Maine 5

Miranda Fish went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and provided the Spartans with strong defensive play recording four consecutive outs over the sixth and seventh innings leading Castleton to the win.

Down 5-3 heading into the top of the fifth, Fish and Jamie Boyle hit back-to-back doubles to generate the game-tying and go-ahead runs.  With runners on first and third, Boyle laced a double for the Spartans' first run, before Boyle smacked a two-run double over the head of USM's left fielder for the lead.

Clinging to a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth, Castleton relief pitcher Machaila Arjavich worked her way around an error and two runners on inducing a pop up and a ground out to end the inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Fish gunned down a pair of Husky batters fielding sharply hit grounders, and then snagged an inning ending line out to keep the Spartans ahead 6-5 headed into the seventh. Wright returned to the circle for the Spartans in the bottom of the seventh, and Fish grabbed another line-out before Wright picked up the save with a pair of ground outs to earn the win.

Arjavich earned the win pitching 2.0 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit.  Wright earned the save with a scoreless and hitless seventh. Brown took the loss for USM, allowing three runs, two earned on five hits and a walk.
