GORHAM, Maine – Junior Kayleigh Bohan(Bedford, N.H.) hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-1 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in game one of a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday night at the USM Softball Stadium. Bowdoin came back to defeat the Huskies in game two, 9-4.
With the split, Southern Maine stands at 12-9 on the season, while the Polar Bears are now 13-10. USM has split its last two series.
GAME ONE: Southern Maine 3, Bowdoin 1
Bohan and senior captainBrooke Cross(Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) struck for two of the Huskies' three hits in the contest, while juniorMadison Greene(Moultonborough, N.H.) pitched a complete game win to propel USM over Bowdoin.
Cross connected on a two-out double down the left field line to break open a scoreless game and put the Huskies on the board. The double was Cross' fourth of the season and 25th of her career and gave USM a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. With two outs, freshman Kaitlyn Nelson(Guildhall, Vermont/White Mountains Regional) reached base safely on an infield fielding error, and then stole second setting the plate for Cross – who knocked in her 17th RBI of the season.
Bowdoin came back to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Maddie Rouhana (Falmouth, Maine) led off with a double to left, and advanced to third on a ground out. Ruby Siltanen (Alameda, Calif.) drove in the game-tying run with a single through the left side. With the score tied 1-1 with one out, Greene found herself in a jam with runners on first and second after a wild pitch and a walk, but settled down to force a fly out and a line out to get out of the inning.
Both teams were quiet in the their next at bats before Bohan's home run in the sixth. With one down, junior Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.)took first on Bowdoin's second fielding error of the game as the go-ahead run. Launching a ball over the right field fence, Bohan collected her second home run of the season and third of her career to put the Huskies up 3-1.
Greene completed the game, working around a lead-off single in the top of the seventh, getting a pair of ground outs and an infield pop-up for the win. Greene finished the game scattering four hits and a walk over seven innings. Greene is now 2-0 on the season. Siltanen took the loss for Bowdoin allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits and a pair of walks. She struck out eight.
GAME TWO: Bowdoin 9, Southern Maine 4
Ahead 5-4 heading into the top of the sixth, Bowdoin pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the sixth and held on for the 9-4 win over Southern Maine in game two. Rouhana had three RBI in the game, including an RBI single in the pivotal sixth inning for the Polar Bears.
Led by three hits each from Kasey Cunningham and Kate Hoadley, Bowdoin collected 11 hits off of Southern Maine pitchers Brown and freshman Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan). Rouhana joined Cunningham and Hoadley as repeat hitters for Bowdoin.
Hoadley was the winning pitcher for the Polar Bears allowing four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out five in five innings of work. Samantha Roy pitched the final two innings striking out three and issuing a walk. Roy did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings.
Brown absorbed the loss allowing five runs (four earned) in 4.1 innings. Brown gave up six hits and three walks, while striking out two. Alward allowed four runs in 2.2 innings on five hits. She struck out four.
Brown, who went 1-for-3 at the plate, led USM with two RBI. Freshman Brynn Hink (Porter, Maine/Sacopee Valley) went 1-for-4 with her second career double, and scored a run. Bohan was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Southern Maine travels to Rhode Island College on Saturday (1:00 pm) for a Little East Conference double header.
