2019 Little East Conference Softball Tournament 

 

GORHAM, Maine – Winning five of its last six conference games the University of Southern Maine Huskies earned the fourth seed in the upcoming 2019 Little East Conference Softball Championship Thursday through Saturday May 2-4. 

            The six-team double elimination tournament is hosted by the top-seed UMass Dartmouth Corsairs.  The Corsairs earned the regular season championship with a 12-4 record in LEC action and a 22-16 overall record.  The fourth-seeded Huskies will face the third-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors in their opening game at 2 pm on Thursday.  

            Southern Maine enters the tournament with a record of 21-16 overall and 8-8 in the Little East Conference, earning sweeps of Plymouth State, UMass Boston and non-conference Colby College to close out the season with a 7-1 record in its final eight games, including a split on the road at Western Connecticut. 

            As a team, the Huskies are hitting .313 (313-for-1000) with 59 doubles, seven triples, 11 home runs and 180 RBI.  

            Offensively, Southern Maine is led by captains senior Brooke Cross (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and juniors Erin Martin (Biddeford, Maine) and Alexis Brown (Malden, Mass.).  Martin is hitting a team-best .392 with 49 hits, including a team-best five home runs, and has driven in 24 RBI.  Cross is hitting a career-best .358  (44-for-123), adding 23 RBI and 13 extra base hits. Brown is hitting .336 and is tied with Martin and junior Ashley Tinsman (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) for the team-lead in RBI (24).  Against LEC opponents, Brown's batting average jumps up to .389.

            Brown and freshman Ashley Alward (Cornville, Maine/Skowhegan) have provided the Huskies with a solid combination in the circle.  Brown, a second team All-LEC pitcher in 2018, has pitched 100.0 innings for the Huskies this season with a 10-6 record. She is 6-3 in the month of April with a 2.48 earned run average.  Alward has seven wins in her rookie campaign and a solid 2.41 earned run average against conference opponents.  She is 6-3 in the month of April, and is averaging 6.2 strikeouts per contest.
