Southern Maine Names Kim Howrigan Women’s Basketball Captain


GORHAM, Maine – Preparing for its season opening games at the USM Veterans Day Tip Off Tournament, fourth-year head coach Samantha Allen announced senior forward Kimberly Howrigan(Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) as captain of the 2018-2019 University of Southern Maine Women's Basketball team. 

            A four-year member of the Huskies squad and a three-year William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete, Howrigan is the first Huskies' women's basketball player to be named captain since the 2015-2016 season. A leader on and off of the court, Howrigan is an Accounting and Finance major at the University and has been a two-year officer in USM's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), serving as the 2018-2019 SAAC President. At the conclusion of her junior year, Howrigan was recognized by the University for her contributions to the campus and surrounding community at its annual Student Awards Banquet and Gala, earning the University's Outstanding Community Service Individual award. 

            "Kim is the type of student-athlete that every coach hopes to recruit and retain to their program," noted Allen, a 2018 WBCA Thirty Under 30 recipient.  "Kim brings all of the intangibles on and off of the court.  An outstanding student, teammate, and person, Kim's commitment to her academics, her team, and community service are second to none. She has displayed the integrity, willingness and ability to meet the high standards of being an outstanding leader for our program and has earned the respect of her peers and of our coaching staff."

            A two-time All-LEC Academic Team member, Howrigan had the best season of her career as a junior playing in 27 games while starting in 24.   The 5-11 forward established career highs in points, rebounds, assists and steals during 2017-2018, helping USM to a third place finish in the Little East Conference. Scoring in double-digits in six games, Howrigan scored a career-high 16 points twice during the season, including 56-49 LEC win at Rhode Island College (February 2, 2018). Howrigan also grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds against RIC in a 54-40 win at home (January 10, 2018). 

            Coming off of its third place finish a season ago, Southern Maine is picked to finish third again in the 2018-19 Little East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The Huskies return a majority of its roster from last season including 2018 Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year senior guard Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton School (NH)) and sophomore guard Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) – the reigning Little East Conference, New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) and D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year.  The Huskies also return junior guard Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.), a 2017 MWBCA All-Rookie Team selection, who missed last season due to injury, and two-year starting forward Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt).  

            The Huskies season-opening tournament, the USM Veterans Day Tip Off Tournament, will including the Thomas College Terriers, UMaine Farmington Beavers and the Castleton University Spartans.   Southern Maine opens up against UMF at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 9.  Thomas and Castleton will square off in the tournament's opening game at 5 p.m. at Hill Gym.  Structured in a classic format, UMF and Castleton will play on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) in the third game, while Southern Maine will take on Thomas (2:00 p.m.) in the final game. As part of the event, Huskies' women's basketball and the Department of Athletics will be hosting a Toys for Tots drive and will accept unwrapped toys in lieu of admission.
