Women's Basketball Hosts USM Veterans Day Tip Off, Toys For Tots Drive

GORHAM, Maine – With less than 24 hours until the tip off of the 2018-2019 season, the University of Southern Maine Huskies' women's basketball team is hoping for a large turnout of fans from all four teams to help make its first USM Veterans Day Tip Off Tournament a memorable event – not just for an exciting two days of NCAA Division III women's basketball, but to also help the United States Marine Corps Reserves' Toys for Tots toy drive collect a large number of donations for underprivledged children in Maine.

"We are obviously excited for the start of our season, as I am sure the teams from Thomas, Castleton and UMaine Farmington are, but we are also tremendously grateful to be honoring our veterans, and assist in the fundraising efforts by the Marine Corp Reserves Toys for Tots fundraiser, and host Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 25th Marines," said fourth-year head coach Samantha Allen.  "As USM is known for its commitment to veterans, and several of our student-athletes have or are presently serving in the armed forces, we are happily using this opening weekend to recognize our service members, and to showcase the great work being done at each institution to help veterans successfully make the transition to students in higher education."

The USM Veterans Day Tip Off Tournament will be hosted at Hill Gymnasium inside the Costello Sports Complex on Friday and Saturday, November 9-10 on the University of Southern Maine's Gorham campus.  Admission for games can be earned through a donation of an unwrapped toy to the USMC Toys for Tots Drive, or through a gate fee of $5 per adult, $3 per student with valid ID.

With two games played on each day, the first game of the tourney will feature the Castleton University Spartans versus the Thomas College Terriers at 5 p.m., and will be followed by the Huskies' season-opener against UMaine Farmington Beavers at 7 p.m.  During the Friday night contests, the University's Veterans Services Office will host a USM Veterans Tip Off Reception from 6-8 p.m. in the Alumni Reception Center in the USM Ice Arena.  In addition to the on-the-court action, USM's Army ROTC Color Guard will be on-hand prior to the start of the Huskies' game. The USMC Reserves will also be present during Friday night's contests administering its Toys For Tots drive.

Saturday's contests are scheduled for 12 and 2 p.m.  Game three of the tournament has UMF squaring off against Castleton, before the tournament concludes with the Huskies versus Terriers.  At the conclusion of all four games a Veterans Day Tip Off All-Tournament team will be announced.

All four games will be broadcast live through the Little East Conference Network  - littleeasttv.com – and can be accessed through the Huskies' official athletic website southernmainehuskies.com

Coming off of its third place finish a season ago, Southern Maine is picked to finish third again in the 2018-19 Little East Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The Huskies return a majority of their roster from last season including 2018 Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Year senior guard Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton School (NH)) and sophomore guard Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) – the reigning Little East Conference, New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA) and D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year.  The Huskies also return junior guard Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.), a 2017 MWBCA All-Rookie Team selection, who missed last season due to injury, and two-year starting forward Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) – a 2017 LEC All-Rookie team selection.
