With each team playing in its season opener, Southern Maine starts its 2018-2019 season at 1-0.  UMaine Farmington is now 0-1.  The Huskies will face Thomas College on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) in the final game of the tournament, while UMaine Farmington will face Castleton University (12:00 p.m.).  At the conclusion of the tournament, USM will announce an all-tournament team.  Fans interested in attending tomorrow's game are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to help raise donations for the United States Marine Corps Toys For Tots drive.

Coming off of the bench, Howe was 4-for-4 from the field, and 3-for-3 from three-point range to lead Southern Maine.  Seniors Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton School (NH)) and Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) and freshman Victoria Harris (Lewiston, Maine) each had eight points. Srolovitz added six rebounds and three assists, while Harris added six boards, two assists and a blocked shot.  Junior Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) had a solid all-around game with six points, seven rebounds, two steals, two blocked shots and an asssit.

Senior Haley Felkel (Cumberland, Maine/Greely) led all scorers with 14 points.  Senior Paige Carter (South Portland, Maine) added eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Senior Morgan Crocker (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region) chipped in with eight points and four rebounds.

Ahead by three, 9-6, with 3:34 to play in the first quarter, USM outscored UMF 9-2 to close out the frame taking control of the game. USM started off the second quarter hot led by five points from Harris, including a traditional three-point play, and went into the halftime break with a comfortable 33-24 lead.  Felkel scored all 14 of her points on 6-for-11 shooting to keep the Beavers in the game in the first half.

With buckets from Howrigan, Luckhardt, and back-to-back points in the paint from junior Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) USM rattled off an 8-0 run to start the second half and assume a commanding 41-26 lead with 6:37 left in the third.  A jumper from Carter halted the Huskies' scoring spurt, but Southern Maine ran off a 17-5 run, including back-to-back triples from Howe and a three from sophomore Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine), to grow its lead to 58-31.  From there the Huskies cruised to the 71-44 final in its season-opener.
