GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Victoria Harris (Lewiston, Maine) had 13 points, four rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals to lead a well-balanced offense as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Thomas College Terriers 55-36 in a the final game of the 2018 USM Veterans Day Tip Off Tournament Saturday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
With the win, Southern Maine opens its season at 2-0. Thomas College is now 0-2 with a pair of losses at the tourney. Junior guard Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) highlighted the all-tournament team earning Most Valuable player honors and was joined by senior Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/New Hampton School (NH)) from the Huskies on the team. Thomas senior Molly Carroll (Southwest Harbor, Maine/MDI), Castleton sophomore Brooke Raiche (Ira, Vermont/West Rutland) and UMaine Farmington senior Paige Carter (South Portland, Maine) rounded out the Veterans Day Tip Off All-Tournament Team.
After giving up the first two points of the game, Southern Maine outscored Thomas College 23-4 in the first period to assume control of the game early with a 23-6 lead and then played stifling team defense limiting the Terriers to just one point in the second quarter for an overwhelming 35-7 halftime lead. Srolovitz scored nine points in the first half, while Harris scored eight in the second half to lead USM. The Huskies started the second half similar to the first outscoring Thomas 6-1 in the first five minutes led by back-to-back driving layups, and a steal and layup from sophomore Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) to lead 41-8 with 5:27 left in the third. From there USM cruised to a 55-36 win.
Harris was 5-for-7 from the field for her career-high total. Srolovitz had nine points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Luckhardt had six points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Senior Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) added eight points, and four rebounds.
Carroll led Thomas with 10 points, while sophomore Addie Brinkman (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) led all players with a game-high 14 rebounds and five points. Freshman Molly Horton (Brownington, Vermont/Lakes Region Union) added nine points, four rebounds and two assists.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) when it hosts local non-conference rival University of New England.
