GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Victoria Harris (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's basketball team was named the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) Rookie of the Week after a pair of strong performances in her intercollegiate debut, helping the Huskies to a 2-0 start to their 2018-2019 season.
Playing in her first two collegiate games, the Huskies' rookie forward averaged 10.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.0 steals, 1.0 assists per game with a 2.0 assist-to-turnover ratio while averaging just 13.0 minutes per contest. Knocking down 8-of-15 from the field, Harris shot a solid 53.3 percent from the field and was 5-for-7 from the free throw line for a 71.4 percent clip.
In Southern Maine's 71-44 win over UMaine Farmington, Harris had eight points, six rebounds, a blocked shot and two assists. Against Thomas, a 55-38 win for Southern Maine, Harris was 5-for-7 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free throw line in just 11 minutes for a game and season-high 13 points, adding four rebounds, three blocked shots, and two assists.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday (6:00 p.m.) hosting local rival University of New England at Hill Gymnasium.
