GORHAM, Maine – Senior Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass./Greater New Bedford) had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the field and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Umass Dartmouth Corsairs to a 70-60 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Wednesday night at Hill Gymnasium.
The win is the fifth straight for the conference leading Corsairs who are now 15-3 overall and 8-1 in the Little East. Southern Maine holds third place in the LEC and is 11-6 overall and 7-3 in conference action.
The Corsairs shot 51.9 percent from the field for the game and had three players in double figures led by Examond. Senior Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass./Quaboag Regional) had 11 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Shaelyn Carreiro (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) added 10 points off of the bench. Junior Ashley Brown (New Bedford, Mass./Fairhaven) had nine points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Senior Alexa Srolovitz (Montreal, Quebec/North Hampton School (NH)) led USM with 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals, while senior Kimberly Howrigan (Fairfield, Vermont/Bellows Free Academy) had 10 points. Sophomore Kristen Curley (Gorham, Maine) added nine points four rebounds and an assist, and junior Chantel Eells (Turner, Maine/Leavitt) tossed in eight points. Junior Jackie Luckhardt (Londonderry, N.H.) had seven points, five rebounds, six steals and four assists.
Ahead 18-16 after a back and forth first quarter, USM was outscored 14-7 in the second to fall behind 30-25 at the half. The Corsairs pulled away in the third and led by 10, 46-36, with 3:18 left in the frame after a layup from junior Kayla McMahon (Hanover, Mass.), but USM pulled to within six outscoring the Corsairs 6-2 in down the stretch. Srolovitz and Curley combined for all six of the Huskies points in the run.
The Huskies kept it close in the fourth and trailed by one or two possessions on several possessions, but UMD halted each run with timely baskets. A layup from Husky freshman Victoria Harris (Altus, Okla./Lewiston) made it a three point game, 50-47, but Examond grabbed an offensive rebound and scored the put back on the next play to extend the Corsairs, and Korcez followed with another layup to quickly make it a 54-47 game. USM trailed by two possessions, 63-57, with 2:40 to play, but Brown made a crucial layup with 1:30 on the clock and the Corsairs closed the game out on the line for the 70-60 final.
Southern Maine travels to Little East Conference opponent Rhode Island College for its next Lcontest on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
