GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Samantha Fallon (Pembroke, Mass.) snapped a 2-2 tie with 8:03 to play to give the visiting University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons a 3-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in ECAC Women's East play Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena. The game was the regular season finale for both teams.
UMass Boston finished the regular season 11-10-4 overall and 7-8-1 in the league. Southern Maine lost its fourth straight to finish 10-14-1 overall and 7-9-0 in ECAC play. Both teams will advance to next weekend's championship tournament quarterfinals. The tournament seedings will be announced following the conclusion of Saturday's games.
Fallon converted the rebound of a shot by senior Courtney White (Medford, Mass.) into her team-leading 15th goal of the season. White was stopped on her bid to break the tie by USM junior goalie Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.), but the rebound went right to Fallon who slipped the puck past Bergstrom.
Tied at 1-1 after two periods, UMB took the lead 32 seconds into the third period with a power-play goal by junior Alyssa Sullivan (Medford, Mass.). Sullivan beat Bergstrom from the left wing circle after being set up by senior Katie Loiselle (Glocester, R.I.) and rookie Kat Armstrong (Boulder, Colo.).
Southern Maine tied the game at 2-2 five minutes later when rookie Liz Kozlowski (Stoneham, Mass.) scored her fourth marker of the season from a bad angle. Sophomore Chelsea Boucher (Gilford, N.H.) and junior Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) picked up the assists.
The teams traded goals in the opening period to produce a 1-1 tie. Junior Kayla Kiernan (North Smithfield, R.I.) scored from in front after receiving a pass from behind the net by Sullivan to stake the Beacons to a 1-0 lead. Less than two minutes later, the Huskies scored the equalizer as senior forward Bridget O'Brien (Boston, Mass.) tipped home a shot taken by Boucher. Sophomore Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) got the second assist.
UMB junior goalie Moe Bradley (Swampscott, Mass.) earned her sixth win of the season making 12 saves. Bergstrom stopped 20 shots before being lifted with 1:36 to play in favor of the extra attacker as the Huskies pressed for a tying goal.
Southern Maine recognized its four departing seniors - forward Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.), defensemen Shannon Cronin (Wakefield, Mass.) and Jackie Lacroix (Barre, Vt.) and O'Brien - prior to the game.
