Manhattanville Holds Off Southern Maine 2-1

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore goalie Rose Pijaca (Worcester, Mass.) stopped 21 shots to backstop the visiting Manhattanville College Valiants to a 2-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Hockey Conference women's action Friday at the USM Ice Arena.

The win improved the Valiants record to 2-1-0, all in league play.  The Huskies dropped their fourth straight to slide to 0-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the league.

Pijaca only surrendered a late second-period goal to USM senior Olivia Barragree (Red Lodge, Mont.) after the Valiants built a 2-0 lead in the first 32 minutes.  Pijaca stopped six shots in the third period, including a close-range bid by Barragree, to preserve the win.

Manhattanville took a 1-0 lead at 3:46 of the opening period when senior Lindsay Diot (Bethel, Conn.) redirected a shot from the right-wing board by junior Jennifer Machin (Brunswick, Maine) past USM sophomore goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.).

The Valiants doubled their advantage at 12:10 of the second period as senior Taryn Harris (Morrison, Colo.) potted the rebound of a shot from junior Karly Kapur (Sparta, N.J.) for a power-play goal.  Evangelista stopped Kapur's shot from the right point, but the rebound went out to Kapur in the left-wing circle and she buried a 25-foot shot into the open side of the net.

Barragree got the Huskies back within one at 16:55 netting her third goal of the season after taking a pass from rookie Grace Simmons (Buffalo, N.Y.).

Evangelista finished the game with 24 saves.  Manhattanville converted on 1 of 6 power play opportunities while USM was 0 for 7 with the extra skater, including a 35-second, 5-on-3 advantage in the final two minutes.

Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow afternoon (1:00 p.m.) hosting Salve Regina University in an NEHC game.  Manhattanville will play at the University of New England on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
