Amherst Rolls Past Southern Maine 8-0

Huskies Host Sacred Heart for Two-Game Series Starting Tuesday

            GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Alex Toupal (New Brighton, Minn.) scored three goals and had an assist to lead visiting Amherst College to an 8-0 non-conference victory over the University of Southern Maine in New Year's Day women's ice action at the USM Ice Arena.

            The win was the third straight for Amherst improving its overall record to 4-3-1.  The Huskies, playing their first game after a 25-day break, dropped their second straight contest and are now 3-7-0 overall.

            Toupal picked up an assist on rookie Anne Malloy's (Canton, Mass.) first-period goal that gave the visitors the lead at 5:15, and later added her third goal of the season, short-handed, at 9:16 to give Amherst a 2-0 lead after one period.  Toupal added two goals in the third period to record the hat trick.

            Senior Lynndy Smith (Glendale, Ariz.) also had a four-point game notching a goal and three assists.  Sophomore Katie Savage (Hebron, Conn.) added a goal and two assists, while senior Caitlyn Ryan (Burlington, Mass.) passed out three assists.

            Amherst junior goalie Sabrina Dobbins (Bedford, N.H.) stopped 15 USM shots to record her first shutout of the season, and the ninth of her career.

            Junior Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) started in goal for Southern Maine stopping 27 shots and surrendering five goals.  Rookie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) took over in net with 16:34 to play and made 11 saves.

            Amherst outshot Southern Maine 46-15 in the game, including a 37-10 margin over the final two periods.  Amherst converted on 2 of 5 power-play opportunities while Southern Maine was 0 for 1 with the extra skater.

            Southern Maine is back in action Tuesday (4:00 p.m.) and Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) hosting Division I independent Sacred Heart University for a two-game series.  Amherst will play at NESCAC rival Middlebury College in a two-game series this coming Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Saturday (3:00 p.m.).
