Castleton Downs Southern Maine 4-1

RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Castleton University Spartans scored three times in the third period to take a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a New England Hockey Conference women's game Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.

The win improved the Spartans record to 4-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the conference.  The Huskies dropped their second straight to slide to 2-5-0 overall and 2-4-0 in NEHC games.

The visiting Huskies took a 1-0 lead early in the first period as sophomore Amanda Piknick (Hyannis, Mass.) converted on a breakaway for her third goal of the season.  Rookie Samantha Comeau (Maple Grove, Minn.) picked up the lone assist on the play.

USM sophomore goaltender Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) protected the lead for the remainder of period stopping 14 shots.  Castleton piled up a 14-6 edge in shots on goal during the opening 20 minutes.

The Spartans gained the equalizer early in the second period to trigger a run of four unanswered goals.  Junior Jocelyn Forrest (Prince George, B.C.) took a feed from rookie Casey Trail (South Shields, England) and beat Padgett inside the right post.  That would be the only goal of the period as Padgett and CU sophomore goalie Alexis Klam (Aberdeen, N.C.) turned aside every other scoring bid.

In the third period, senior captain Hannah Rose (Kenora, Ontario) snapped the 1-1 tie with her third goal of the season set up by a pass from behind the net by Forrest, at 4:37.  Sophomore Nicolle Trivino (Georgetown, Ontario) gave the Spartans a two-goal advantage with her third marker at 7:16.  Rose and Forrest collected the assists.

Senior Lisa Kilroy (Leominster, Mass.) added an insurance goal for the Spartans with less than two minutes to play.

Castleton finished with a 34-17 edge in shots on goal.  Padgett recorded 30 saves while Klam stopped 16 shots.  The Spartans went 0 for 4 on the power play while the Huskies were 0 for 3 with the extra skater.

Southern Maine hits the road on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.) for a non-conference game at Colby College.  Castleton hosts Franklin Pierce University, also on Tuesday (7:00 p.m.), in non-conference action.
