Southern Maine Falls to UNE 3-0
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Rookies Kyra Yu (Ogden, Utah) and Jessie Scott (Barre, Vt.) each had a goal and an assist Saturday afternoon as the University of New England Nor'easters shut out the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) women's game at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The loss snapped the Huskies' three-game unbeaten streak (2-0-1), and dropped them to 6-12-1 overall and 2-5-1 in NEHC play. With the win, the Nor'easters took three out of a possible four points over the weekend home-and-home series with the Huskies, and jump into fourth place in the NEHC standings. UNE improved to 7-6-6 overall and 2-2-4 in conference games.
Yu put the home side on top midway through the opening period scoring a power-play goal at 11:47. Senior Kierra Wright (Georgia, Vt.) earned the lone assist on the play.
Sophomore Tatum Gietl (Littleton, Colo.) doubled the Nor'easters advantage less than two minutes later converting a set-up from Scott and junior Julianne Sheehan (Chelmsford, Mass.).
Scott would add a goal in the final minute of the game off an assist from Yu to account for the final tally.
USM junior goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) was under siege facing 47 shots and turning aside 44. In the two-game series, Evangelista stopped 89 of 95 shots. The 44-save effort marked the seventh time this season that Evangelista has recorded 40 or more saves in a game. UNE sophomore goalie Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass.) made nine saves to earn her third shutout of the season.
Southern Maine returns to action next Friday evening (7:00 p.m.) hosting Plymouth State University. UNE will host New England College on Friday (7:00 p.m.).
