#1/#2 Norwich Skates Past Southern Maine 7-2

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Bryn Labbe (Calgary, Alberta) and sophomore Amanda Conway (Methuen, Mass.) scored two goals apiece to lead the #1/#2 Norwich University Cadets to a 7-2 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in New England Hockey Conference women's action Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.

The win extends the Cadets' unbeaten streak to 11 games (9-0-2), and gave them sweep of the teams' home-and-home season series.  The Cadets improved their record to 20-1-2 overall and 13-0-0 in conference play.  The Huskies slip to 8-15-1 overall and 4-8-1 in the league.

Labbe put the Cadets on the board early netting her 12th goal of the season off an assist from Samantha Benoit (Bow, N.H.) at 3:22 of the first period.  Senior Nicole Goebel (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan), streaking towards the net, redirected a pass from junior Carly Menges (Novelty, Ohio) into the net for a power-play goal at 14:02 giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Southern Maine got one back later in the period when junior Julia Ormsby (Barre, Vt.) broke up a play at center ice and sent rookie Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) into the offensive zone.  Colbert snapped a wrist shot from 25 feet out off the crossbar and past NU rookie goalie Emily Lambert (Riverview, Mich.) for her sixth goal of the season.

Norwich broke the game open in the second period outscoring USM 3-1 to take a 5-2 lead after 40 minutes.  Sophomore Alyssa Hulst (Scarborough, Maine) found the net at 1:30 to make it 3-1.

The teams exchanged goals 41 seconds apart in the middle stages making it 4-2.  Conway scored her 24th goal of the season at 11:01 while the teams were skating four aside.  USM junior Jensen Hamblett (Colchester, Vt.) tallied a 4-on-3 power-play goal off an assist from Ormsby at 11:42.

Labbe's second goal of the game at 14:38 restored the Cadets' three-goal cushion heading into the final period.

In the third period, Conway scored her second of the game at 5:53, and junior Adrieana Rossini (Malden, Mass.) closed the scoring with an unassisted marker at 14:40.

Lambert finished the night making 10 saves to earn her fifth win against no losses.  USM sophomore Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) played the first two periods in net allowing five goals and making 20 saves.  Junior Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) came on to play the final period surrendering two goals while stopping 11 shots.

Norwich piled up a 38-12 advantage in shots on goal and was successful on its two power plays.  USM went 1 for 3 with the man advantage.

Southern Maine concludes the regular season on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) hosting Castleton University.  Norwich travels to the University of New England on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
