Colbert Scores Two; Huskies at UMass Boston on Saturday
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) scored a pair of first-period goals to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Johnson and Wales University Wildcats in New England Hockey Conference women's action Friday at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the first of the season for the Huskies who are now 1-1-1 overall and 1-0-0 in the league. The Wildcats remain winless after three games overall and 0-1-0 in NEHC play.
Colbert put the Huskies up 1-0 with a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 5:07 of the first period after taking a pass from behind the net by senior Julia Ormsby (Barre, Vt.). Just over six minutes later, Colbert scored her second of the period tucking a close-range shot past JWU rookie goaltender Jasmine Mucci (Arlington, Mass.).
Sophomore Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) made it 3-0 for the Huskies in the final minute of the first period with a wrist shot from the right-wing circle up over Mucci's shoulder.
USM scored the only goal of the middle period when senior Joanna Scheidegger (Lyss, Switzerland) scored her first collegiate goal knocking in the rebound of a shot from rookie Shannon Douglas (Telford, England) at 6:28.
The Wildcats broke up USM junior goalie Whitney Padgett's (Eden Prairie, Minn.) bid for a shutout when junior Kathryn Mason (Grafton, Mass.) scored at 9:05 of the final period. Mason's shot appeared to hit the post and play continued. The goal was awarded at the next stoppage in play after the officials conferred and deciding that the puck had gone into the net.
Padgett earned her first win of the season stopping 21 shots while Mucci had 23 saves before being lifted for the extra skater in the final minute.
Southern Maine is back in action tomorrow afternoon (1 p.m.) traveling to the University of Massachusetts Boston for an NEHC game. Johnson and Wales will play fellow NEHC newcomer Suffolk University on Saturday (5:20 p.m.).
