Southern Maine Falls at Castleton 3-1
RUTLAND, Vt. -- The Castleton University Spartans got goals from three different players and junior goalie Alexis Kalm (Aberdeen, N.C.) stopped 23 shots as the Spartans defeated the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-1 in a women's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) game Saturday at Spartan Arena.
The win extends the Spartans' unbeaten string to three games (2-0-1) and improved their record to 2-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in NEHC play. The Huskies dropped their second straight game to slip to 2-3-1 overall and 2-2-0 in the conference.
After a scoreless first period, it took the Spartans just 15 seconds in the second period to take the lead. Senior Jocelyn Forrest (Prince George, B.C.) scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season converting a set-up from senior Jade Remillard (Fairfield, Vt.) and sophomore Courtney Gauthier (Tampa, Fla.). Forrest has scored seven of the Spartans' 13 goals to date this season.
Sophomore Ali Stevens (Jefferson, Mass.) scored what proved to be the game winner at 12:57 of the middle period.
Less than three minutes later, the Huskies pulled back to within one as junior Katie Nolan (Dorchester, Mass.) tallied her second marker of the season after assists from rookie Shannon Douglas (Telford, England) and junior Amanda Piknick (Hyannis, Mass.).
The Spartans picked up an insurance goal in the third period when junior Nicolle Trivino (Georgetown, Ont.) scored a 5-on-3 power-play goal at 9:20. Trivino also had an assist on the Stevens' goal in the second period.
Kalm finished with 23 saves, including 10 in the third period, to earn her second win of the season. Senior Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) stopped 25 shots for the Huskies.
Southern Maine returns home next weekend to face NEHC foes Plymouth State University on Friday (4 p.m.) and Salem State University on Saturday (1 p.m.) at the USM Ice Arena. Castleton travels to Norwich University on Saturday (3 p.m.) for its next game.
