Huskies Take on Hamilton on Saturday
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Junior Jill Hannigan (Portland, Maine) and sophomore Rylie Binette (Milan, N.H.) each scored two goals to lead the University of Southern Maine women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Saint Michael's College Friday evening in a first-round game of the Delta Hotels Burlington Ice Hockey Classic at Cairns Arena.
The Huskies, winless in their previous five games (0-2-3), improved to 4-5-4 overall with the non-conference win. The Purple Knights, the tournament hosts, dropped their fifth consecutive game to slip to 3-8-0 overall.
Hannigan netted the Huskies' first two goals before Binette scored twice to give the visitors a 4-0 advantage. Senior Madison Nichols (Gilford, N.H.) potted the lone Purple Knights' lone goal midway through the third period.
Junior goalie Whitney Padgett (Eden Prairie, Minn.) stopped 35 shots in the USM net to earn her third win of the season. Junior Vika Simons (Essex Junction, Vt.) made 23 saves for Saint Michael's.
Hannigan gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead just 81 seconds into the game knocking home a loose puck. Rookie Shannon Douglas (Telford, England) sent a pass from the left-wing circle across to sophomore Shannon Colbert (Manomet, Mass.) who tapped the puck in front where Hannigan knocked it in for her fourth goal of the season. Padgett protected the lead throughout the period as the Purple Knights rolled up a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Early in the second period, Colbert and Douglas set up Hannigan again for what proved to be the game-winning goal at 3:14. Binette's first marker of the night at 11:53 came when she redirected a shot from senior Jensen Hamblett (Colchester, Vt.) past Simons.
Binette scored her fourth goal of the season 39 second into the third period when her dump-in eluded Simon.
The Purple Knight averted Padgett's bid for a shutout when Madison Nichols scored on the power play at 8:19. Padgett made the save on sophomore Riley Nichols' (Gilford, N.H.) initial shot, but Madison Nichols was able to deposit the rebound over Padgett into the top corner.
Saint Michael's finished the game with a 36-27 edge in shots on goal. The Purple Knights converted on 1 of 6 power plays while holding the Huskies scoreless on two extra-man advantages.
Southern looks to make it two in a row on Saturday (1 p.m.) taking on Hamilton College. Hamilton defeated Buffalo State College 7-2 in the other first round game. Saint Michael's takes on Buffalo State in the second game (4 p.m.).
